Roller, sectional or tilt: which garage door suits your Sydney home?

Comparing roller, sectional and tilt garage doors for Sydney homes: space, headroom, insulation, noise, security and looks, explained in plain English.

Choosing a new garage door comes down to your garage's size, how you use the space and the look of your home. Here is how the three main styles compare.

Roller doors

A roller door coils up into a drum above the opening. It is usually the most affordable option and suits garages with limited headroom.

  • Good for: tight budgets, low ceilings, sheds and rear-lane garages
  • Trade-offs: less weather sealing and insulation, and fewer design options

Sectional doors

Sectional doors are made of horizontal panels that run up tracks and sit flat against the garage ceiling.

  • Good for: short driveways (they open straight up), insulation, quiet running and a premium look
  • Trade-offs: need more headroom and ceiling space, and usually cost more

Tilt doors

A tilt door is a single panel that swings out and up. They are common in older homes and units.

  • Good for: a seamless, flat look and matching cladding to the house
  • Trade-offs: need clear space in front to swing out, and are heavy on springs

What about the coast?

If you live near the water in suburbs like Coogee, Bondi or Maroubra, ask about corrosion-resistant hardware and plan for regular servicing, whichever style you choose.
