Living near the beach is wonderful, but salt spray settles on everything metal, including the springs, cables and tracks that keep your garage door working.
What salt air does
Salt draws in moisture and speeds up rust. On a garage door, that means springs that snap sooner, cables that fray, rollers that seize and motors that work harder against a stiff door.
Simple things you can do
- Rinse the outside of the door with fresh water every few months, particularly after windy weather
- Wipe the tracks and guides clean of sand and grit
- Keep the safety beam lenses clean
- Listen for new noises: grinding or squealing is an early warning
What to leave to a technician
Do not adjust springs or cables yourself. They are under high tension and can cause serious injury. A professional service includes the right lubricants, a spring and cable check and an opener safety test.
How often to service
For homes within a few blocks of the water, we recommend a service every six months. Further inland, once a year is usually enough.
